Understanding spatial relations: flexible infants, lexical adults.
Concepts of containment, support, and degree of fit were investigated using nonverbal, preferential-looking tasks with 9- to 14-month-old infants and adults who were fluent in either English or Korean. Two contrasts were tested: tight containment vs. loose support (grammaticized as 'in' and 'on' in English by spatial prepositions and 'kkita' and 'nohta' in Korean by spatial verbs) and tight con...
متن کاملPerception of Lexical Neutral Tone Among Adults and Infants
Neutral tone (T0) is a special tone form in Mandarin that contains tonal and stress information. Compared with canonical tones, T0 has a much shorter duration and reduced pitch contour. Its tonal contour is determined by the preceding canonical tone. However, not much is known about the perception of tonal and stress information in T0. In the current study, we investigate (1) whether T0 can be ...
متن کاملCombining Lexical and Spatial Knowledge to Predict Spatial Relations between Objects in Images
Explicit representations of images are useful for linguistic applications related to images. We design a representation based on first-order models that capture the objects present in an image as well as their spatial relations. We take a supervised learning approach to the spatial relation classification problem and study the effects of spatial and lexical information on prediction performance...
متن کاملStructural Ambiguity and Lexical Relations
From a certain (admittedly narrow) perspective, one of the annoying features of natural language is the ubiquitous syntactic ambiguity. For a computational model intended to assign syntactic descriptions to natural language text, this seem like a design defect. In general, when context and lexical content are taken into account, such syntactic ambiguity can be resolved: sentences used in contex...
متن کاملNon-Classical Lexical Semantic Relations
NLP methods and applications need to take account not only of “classical” lexical relations, as found in WordNet, but the lessstructural, more context-dependent “nonclassical” relations that readers intuit in text. In a reader-based study of lexical relations in text, most were found to be of the latter type. The relationships themselves are analyzed, and consequences for NLP are discussed.
